Ella Maillard’s space |
|
| The commune of Chandolin and Ella Maillard’s friends wanted to honour the most famous host of Chandolin for half a century (from 1946 to 1997) |
Working in close collaboration with the association Ella Maillard’s friends, a permanent exhibition dedicated to her memory was set up in the ancient St. Barbe’s Chapel in the heart of the old village.
This exhibition retraces her life. On the first floor there is a selection of photographs taken by Ella Maillard. Videotapes and books from her own library complete the exhibition.

A little bit history: At the end of the Second World War, in 1945, the number of inhabitants of Chandolin was exactly 252.
In 1955, the council decided to improve the resort’s position by promoting tourism in the region.
Then in 1961, with the construction of the link road to St-Luc, the inhabitants of Chandolin became sedentary. The green light was given for the development of tourism. The same year a ski lift was built, up to the Illhorn reaching 2700m above sea level.
Nowadays, the commune of Chandolin counts 102 inhabitants with 63 in the village itself.

Fang, a little village in the Val d’Anniviers |
|
| Fang is a small village in the commune of Chandolin. Located between 900 and 1000m above sea level, 4km from Vissoie and 15 from Sierre, this little village is steeped in history. |
Fang has not always been called Fang. In 1090, the people who lived there called it Fam from the latine word fames (hunger) then Fans and finally the present day Fang.
The village is split in three parts:
- Fang d’en haut (Upper Fang) where you can find the Chapel built in 1863, the White House, a few houses and the mill.
- Fang du milieu (Central Fang) where you will find the bread oven built in the 1800s, the schoolhouse, and the beehive.
- On the way to Fang d’en bas (Lower Fang) you will see the Raccard Roczec. The village square, the school and the old school yard are in Fang d’en bas.
This magnificent village still keeps many secrets. Guided tours are organised in the summer to unveil them. Mrs Yvonne Jollien will be pleased to reveal all the secrets of this village.
A book about Fang, on sale at the Tourist Office of Chandolin, will help you discover its history and its many anecdotes.
Do not hesitate to stop there on the way to your destination!

The watermills of Chandolin and Fang |
|
| Two horizontal watermills (that is to say that the round millstone is moved along by a horizontal hydraulic wheel) can be visited in the villages of Fang and Chandolin. |
The latter was renovated in 2000. Both these watermills are fed by the Fang torrent. Mrs. Hirbrunner (in Chandolin) and Devanthéry (in Fang), occasional millers, will gladly share with you their knowledge and secrets.
During the summer every Thursday, setting according to the mill of Chandolin and on demand in Fang.
